Sheridan's 10,000 cavalry reached Lee's forward supply base on the evening of May 9 where a large store of supplies for Lee's army was destroyed. His men wrecked numerous railroad cars and six Virginia Central locomotives, cut the telegraph and freed almost 400 Union prisoners. A night attack by the First Maryland Cavalry delayed their advance on Richmond.
