The blockade made Egypt Britain's main source of cotton and the main supplier to the mills of France and the Austrian Empire. Egypt exported 600,000 cantars of cotton in 1861 and 1.3 million cantars by 1863. The boom paid for rebuilding much of Alexandria and Cairo, and it ended when Southern cotton returned to the world market in 1865.
