Union troops at Fort Myers raided cattle ranches north of the Caloosahatchee to stop beef reaching the Army of Tennessee, taking more than 4,000 head. The Confederate Cow Cavalry, raised to guard the herds and drive them to the railhead at Baldwin, attacked the fort on February 20 and was repelled. The garrison abandoned Fort Myers in early March.
