The Confederate government bought the iron merchant steamer Japan at Dumbarton, Scotland, in March 1863. She left Greenock on April 1, reputedly bound for the East Indies, and met the steamer Alar off Ushant to take on guns, ordnance and stores. She was commissioned CSS Georgia on April 9, 1863.
