The ram Sphinx was built at Bordeaux for the Confederacy, but France blocked the sale in 1863 and the builder sold her to Denmark. The Danes refused her and sold her to the Confederacy at the start of 1865, and a Confederate crew under Lieutenant Thomas J. Page came aboard at Copenhagen on January 6. Off the French coast the blockade runner City of Richmond brought supplies, ammunition and men, and she was commissioned CSS Stonewall.
