Texas cotton crossed the Rio Grande at Matamoros and went by paddle steamer to Bagdad at the river's mouth, where up to 70 European freighters at a time waited with arms, medicine, dry goods and coffee. The port shipped cotton to England and France and traded with London, Havana, Belize and New Orleans. The trade ended with the Confederacy in 1865.
The line follows the sea lanes between the two ports. It shows the water a ship had to cross, not the course a runner sailed.
