The blockading steamers first had to fuel and resupply in Northern ports. On October 28, 1861, 25 coal and ammunition vessels left Hampton Roads for Port Royal, and three ships carrying food and ammunition were lost in a gale on the way. After the capture of Port Royal on November 7, Du Pont built coaling, provisioning and repair works there for the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron.
The line follows the sea lanes between the two ports. It shows the water a ship had to cross, not the course a runner sailed.
