Before the war Fraser, Trenholm and Company ran steamers from Liverpool to New York and Charleston. In 1861 the firm began shipping arms from Liverpool to Charleston, with South Carolina buying the first loads and selling them to the Confederate government.
The line follows the sea lanes between the two ports. It shows the water a ship had to cross, not the course a runner sailed.
