ARMAN SHIPYARD, BORDEAUX
In July 1863 Bulloch contracted with Lucien Arman for two ironclad rams, Cheops and Sphinx, and the yard took a secret order for two corvettes. France blocked delivery in 1864. Denmark sold Sphinx to the Confederacy early in 1865, and she became CSS Stonewall.
Then
In July 1863 Bulloch contracted with Lucien Arman for two ironclad rams, Cheops and Sphinx, and the yard also took a secret order for two corvettes under the cover names Yeddo and Osaka. The rams' guns were made separately to hide their purpose.
France blocked delivery in 1864. Sphinx went to Denmark and Cheops and the corvettes to Prussia. Denmark sold Sphinx to the Confederacy early in 1865, and she became CSS Stonewall.
Now
Creditors took the yard after Arman's 1868 bankruptcy and reformed it as the Ateliers and Chantiers de Bacalan.
