DEMOPOLIS DEPOTS
Confederate depot town on two rivers and the Alabama and Mississippi Rivers Railroad, with commissary and quartermaster warehouses, engineers' shops, a large ordnance depot and two large hospitals. When Selma was about to fall in April 1865, the railroad's rolling stock went west through Demopolis full of supplies.
Then
Set on two rivers and the Alabama and Mississippi Rivers Railroad, finished by the Confederate government in 1862, Demopolis held commissary and quartermaster warehouses, engineers' shops, a large ordnance depot and two large hospitals. Paroled troops from Vicksburg and Port Hudson camped there in 1863.
When Selma was about to fall in April 1865, all the railroad's rolling stock went west full of supplies through Demopolis to Meridian, and eighteen Confederate gunboats and packets moved to the Tombigbee there. The 5th Minnesota occupied the town in May 1865.
