PORT OF NASSAU
Purchases made in England reached Nassau in British ships, 1861-1865, and moved onto faster blockade runners bound for Wilmington, Charleston and Savannah. Lewis Heyliger of New Orleans was Confederate agent here for the whole war. By its end 397 ships sailed from the Confederacy to Nassau and 588 from Nassau to the Confederacy.

Purchases made in England came to Nassau in British ships and were moved onto lighter, faster blockade runners bound for Wilmington, Charleston and Savannah. Lewis Heyliger of New Orleans was the Confederate agent there for the whole war. By the end of the war 397 ships had sailed from the Confederacy to Nassau and 588 from Nassau to the Confederacy.
The first outbound runner from the Confederacy reached Nassau on December 5, 1861, with 144 bales of cotton from Charleston. The governor kept the raider Florida from meeting her tender in the harbor in 1862, so she armed at Green Cay instead.
