BRASHEAR CITY DEPOT
Federal military depot at the crossing of the Atchafalaya River, defended by Fort Brashear. Confederates took it in a surprise attack on June 23, 1863, capturing the garrison, 11 heavy siege guns, 2,500 stands of rifles and immense quantities of quartermaster and ordnance stores.
Then
Brashear City guarded the crossing of the Atchafalaya River, and the Union Army occupying it built the Star Fort of Fort Brashear and a second work to defend a Federal military depot and the town.
Confederates under Mouton, Green and Sherod Hunter crossed Berwick Bay in small boats and took Brashear City on June 23, 1863 in a surprise attack, capturing the garrison, 11 heavy siege guns, 2,500 stands of rifles and immense quantities of quartermaster, commissary and ordnance stores. The trapped Union troops at Bayou Boeuf surrendered the next day, and the captured supplies outfitted Richard Taylor's poorly armed and fed force for its drive toward New Orleans.
