DEVALLS BLUFF DEPOT
Frederick Steele set up the supply depot for his Little Rock army on the White River because the Arkansas River was unreliable. Steamers unloaded into government storehouses, and supplies went on to Little Rock by wagon and over the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad.
Then
Because the Arkansas River was unreliable, Frederick Steele set up the supply depot for his Little Rock army at DeValls Bluff on the White River, about sixty miles east. Steamers unloaded into government storehouses, and supplies went on to Little Rock by wagon and over the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad.
Union forces first took the town on January 18, 1863 and then withdrew. They retook it in August 1863, and it housed supplies and wounded Union soldiers for the rest of the war.
Now
The nearest railroad in service today is a line owned by Union Pacific, about 11 miles from the center of DeValls Bluff.
