Built by the Army of the Cumberland after the Battle of Stones River to a design by Brig. Gen. James St. Clair Morton, Fortress Rosecrans enclosed more than 200 acres of storehouses, sawmills, quartermaster depots and powder magazines around the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad and the West Fork of the Stones River. Its depot stored enough food, equipment and ammunition to supply an army for up to 90 days, and it supported the campaigns that drove the Confederates from Middle Tennessee and took Chattanooga. It was the largest earthen fortification of its kind built during the war.
The fortress was never attacked.
