KENNEBEC ARSENAL

A granite arsenal built from 1828 to 1838 on the east bank of the Kennebec River, with an armory, magazines and a munitions laboratory. Weapons were made there during the Civil War, though its remote location ruled out large-scale production.
The arsenal stayed garrisoned until 1901, when it was turned over to the State of Maine as an expansion of the Maine State Hospital.
Now
The buildings stand in a National Historic Landmark District designated in 2000. A 2006 renovation plan stalled, and in 2013 the state sued the private owner over damage from neglect and vandalism.
The nearest railroad in service today is a line owned by CSX, about 0.8 miles away.
