MEMPHIS DEPOT AND FORT PICKERING
Union ironclads took Memphis on June 6, 1862, and the city became a major Union supply depot and way station. Sherman enlarged Fort Pickering to more than a mile along the river. By 1864 its 102 cannons and more than 10,000 soldiers made it the strongest installation on the Mississippi.
Then
Union ironclads took Memphis on June 6, 1862, and the city became an enormous hub for the Union army: a major supply depot, administrative center, convalescent area and way station for soldiers on furlough. Fort Pickering served as a major supply depot and staging area, and Sherman enlarged it to more than a mile along the river and a third of a mile inland. By 1864 its 102 cannons and more than 10,000 soldiers made it the strongest military installation on the Mississippi.
By December 1863 almost 1,200 Black men had enlisted at Fort Pickering in the 3rd US Colored Heavy Artillery, which manned its guns to the end of the war.
Now
Lines owned by Union Pacific, BNSF and CN run through Memphis today.
