NEW YORK ARSENAL
Ordnance establishment for artillery, moved to Governors Island in 1832. During the war the island mainly supported the mustering of soldiers, and Castle Williams and Fort Columbus held Confederate prisoners. In the 1863 draft riots protesters tried and failed to take the island.
Then
The New York Arsenal, an ordnance establishment that dealt with artillery, moved to Governors Island in 1832 and built an armory, storehouses and a quartermaster's depot there from the 1850s on. During the war the island was mainly a support facility for mustering soldiers, and Castle Williams and Fort Columbus held Confederate prisoners.
During the 1863 draft riots, protesters tried and failed to take over the island while Army troops were deployed to Manhattan.

The arsenal storehouses and armory survive as offices and storage. Building 110, once the quartermaster's depot, became the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Arts Center in 2019, and the north end of the island is Governors Island National Monument.
The nearest railroad in service today is a line owned by a smaller railroad, about 2.1 miles away.
