WEST POINT FOUNDRY
Under superintendent Robert Parker Parrott the foundry made Parrott rifled guns from 10-pounders to 300-pounders. In the war its 1,400 workers produced 2,000 cannon and three million shells. Falling demand for cast iron after the war bankrupted it gradually.
Then
Under superintendent Robert Parker Parrott the foundry made Parrott rifled guns from 10-pounders to 300-pounders. In the war it had 1,400 workers and produced 2,000 cannon and three million shells. Lincoln visited in June 1862 and watched 100- and 200-pounder Parrotts fired.
Falling demand for cast iron after the war bankrupted it gradually, and it ceased operations in the early 20th century.
Now
Ruins
Only the central office building is intact; the rest stands in ruins in an 87-acre Scenic Hudson preserve reached by trail from the Cold Spring station. The archeological site became a National Historic Landmark in 2021.
Track in service today runs beside the site, on a line owned by a smaller railroad.
