White Plains

North of this road is White Plains, a two-story residence built c.1823 for Isaiah DuBose. It was one of the most substantial homes in the antebellum Springville community and the only remaining W of Black Creek. Thomas P. Lide (1810-1882) acquired the house and 1,700-ac. tract in 1839. Lide had the home renovated extensively, with its square shape and much of its character being set by the 1850s.

While living at White Plains, Lide served as an S.C. representative and senator and was a leader in the Darlington Agricultural Society. The house was the center of a cotton plantation worked by enslaved people, sixty-five of whom Lide owned in 1860, when seventeen slave dwellings were on the property. White Plains remained in the Lide family until being sold in 1937.
