White Hall

By 1767, White Hall was an extensive frontier plantation and the home of Andrew Williamson, unschooled son of Scottish settlers and a Backcountry leader in trade, politics, and the military. He, his wife Eliza (Tyler), and four children lived on the White Hall property south of here with a number of enslaved people. During the Revolutionary War he became brigadier general in the S.C. Patriot militia.

From 1776 to 1780, White Hall was a fortified outpost and Williamson’s headquarters from which he led campaigns against the Cherokee and into Ga. and Fl. In 1780 he took British protection and provided them intelligence support. Reviled by many Patriots, he soon abandoned White Hall. It was late destroyed. By early 1782 he had resumed his allegiance to the Patriots as a spy.
