John Benjamin Taylor House

This Craftsman house, built by 1903, was the home of Rev. John Benjamin Taylor (1867-1936) until his death. Taylor, a minister and administrator in the Methodist Episcopal Church 1892-1936, was also a longtime trustee of Claflin University, 1908-1928. Educated at Claflin, he was a teacher and principal in Orangeburg before being appointed a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1892.

Taylor was superintendent of the Charleston District of the Methodist Episcopal Church 1907-1913, then superintendent of the Orangeburg District 1924-1929. He purchased this lot in 1900 and built this house for his first wife Harriet Catherine Dibble Taylor (1873-1918) and four children. He added a half-story in 1927. His second wife Daisy McLain Buckley Taylor lived here until her death in 1965.
