John Laird Sons and Company built hull number 290 at Birkenhead under a contract Confederate agent James Bulloch arranged through Fraser, Trenholm and Company. Launched as Enrica on May 15, 1862, she left Birkenhead unarmed on July 29, 1862, and USS Tuscarora failed to intercept her. Britain later admitted the ship should not have been allowed to sail.
