CSS Alabama put into Cherbourg on June 11, 1864, for repairs, with burned-out boilers and worn machinery. USS Kearsarge arrived and waited off the port, and on June 19 sank Alabama in about an hour outside French territorial waters. The wreck lies about 10 kilometers north of the Cherbourg roads.
