Lynchburg had three railroads, the James River and Kanawha Canal and was a distribution center for food and military supplies. Hunter's army wrecked track at Liberty while VMI cadets came in by canal and Early's first troops came in by train on June 17. Hunter fell back after the June 18 fighting, short on supplies, without reaching the city's railroads.
