High Bridge carried the South Side Railroad 2,500 feet across the Appomattox River, 126 feet up, with a wagon bridge below. On April 6 Confederate cavalry stopped a Union party sent to burn it. On April 7 Mahone's men set both on fire, but the II Corps saved most of the railroad bridge and crossed the wagon bridge, forcing Lee's army on before it could draw rations at Farmville.
