Lee planned to resupply from stocks sent on the Richmond and Danville but found only an inadequate stockpile of rations and a trainload of ordnance. He ordered 200,000 rations from Danville by rail, and Sheridan intercepted the message. The same day Crook's cavalry reached Burkeville Junction and the V Corps entrenched across the tracks at Jetersville, closing the railroad route south.
