While the main armies fought at Glorieta Pass, a Union column guided by New Mexican scouts struck the Confederate supply train at Johnson's Ranch. They looted and burned 80 supply wagons, spiked the cannon and killed or drove off about 500 horses and mules. The loss forced the Texans back to Santa Fe and out of New Mexico Territory, ending their bid for Fort Union.
