The cruiser built by William C. Miller & Sons of Toxteth, Liverpool, with engines from Fawcett, Preston & Co., left England on March 22, 1862, bound for Nassau. She carried only enough coal to reach Nassau so as not to look like a Confederate ship. Stores, armament and coal were put aboard near Green Cay in the Bahamas, where she was commissioned CSS Florida on August 17, 1862.
