The Confederacy closed the gap of about forty miles between Danville and Greensboro in May 1864, using rails torn up from other lines. At Danville it met the Richmond and Danville Railroad, giving the North Carolina Railroad a more direct route north to Lee's army. A gauge difference kept the two lines from being joined at Greensboro until the winter of 1866-1867.
