Completing the gap between Greensboro and Danville was a military need from the start of the war. The line opened in May 1864 and gave the North Carolina Railroad a more direct route north to Lee's army. A gauge difference kept it from being joined to the North Carolina Railroad at Greensboro until the winter of 1866 to 1867.
