COLUMBUS NAVAL YARD
The ironclad CSS Muscogee, later renamed Jackson, was laid down here on the Chattahoochee in 1862, and the adjacent Columbus Naval Iron Works built her steam engines. Union troops burned the unfinished Jackson and cut her loose after taking Columbus on April 17, 1865.
