BOSTON NAVY YARD
During the war the yard built 17, launched 23 and converted 40 vessels, among them the monitor Monadnock, and repaired more than a hundred more. A yard railroad joined it to a spur of the Fitchburg Railroad. In 1866 the Navy canceled work on unfinished vessels.
Then
During the war the yard built 17, launched 23 and converted 40 vessels, among them cruisers, gunboats, sloops of war and the monitor Monadnock, and repaired more than a hundred more. Wartime additions included a heavy hammer house, an ordnance store, machine shop upgrades and a yard railroad joined to a spur of the Fitchburg Railroad.
In 1866 the Navy canceled work on unfinished vessels, cut the workforce and sold off stockpiles.

Park
The yard closed in 1974. The National Park Service holds 25 acres as part of Boston National Historical Park, where USS Constitution is docked, and most other buildings have been redeveloped for offices, shops and homes.
The nearest railroad in service today is a line owned by a smaller railroad, about 0.8 miles away.
