MASON MACHINE WORKS
In 1861 Mason took a government contract for 100,000 Springfield rifles and enlarged the plant, but the War Department cut the order to 30,000. The works also built locomotives, including the Dalton for the United States Military Railroad in 1864.

After the war the Dalton was sold to the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Its tender survives, paired with the locomotive Texas.

The site holds a bus depot and garage, an apartment building and other businesses. Part of it remains undeveloped because of likely soil contamination.
Lines owned by smaller railroads run through Taunton today.
