BRIDGEPORT SHIPYARD
Rail and river town on the Tennessee River, seized by Union troops in 1862. In the latter part of the war it held a major Union shipyard that built gunboats and transports, including the USS Chattanooga of the Cracker Line that broke the siege of Chattanooga.
Then
Bridgeport stood on both a rail line and the Tennessee River. Ormsby Mitchel's Union troops seized it in 1862, and after Bragg's troops burned the town in summer 1863 Union forces reoccupied it. In the latter part of the war it held a major Union shipyard that built gunboats and transports for the army, including the USS Chattanooga, which became part of the Cracker Line that broke the siege of Chattanooga in November 1863.
The railroad bridge was burned twice during the war.
