STEVENSON JUNCTION
Main junction of the Memphis and Charleston and the Nashville and Chattanooga railroads, with supply depots and warehouses along the lines. Union soldiers and freed slaves built Fort Harker on a hill east of town in 1862, and Rosecrans made his headquarters there in July 1863.
Then
Stevenson was the main junction of the Memphis and Charleston and the Nashville and Chattanooga railroads, with supply depots and warehouses along the lines. Union soldiers and freed slaves built Fort Harker, a 150-foot-square earthen redoubt, on a hill a quarter-mile east in summer 1862 and expanded it in 1864, and the army added another large fort, two smaller redoubts and at least seven blockhouses along the railroads. Rosecrans made his headquarters at Fort Harker in July 1863.
The original depot of about 1852 was destroyed during or shortly after the war.
