CAIRO NAVAL STATION
Andrew Hull Foote made Cairo the naval station of the Union's river fleet on September 6, 1861. The repair machinery sat afloat on wharf-boats, old steamers and rafts. Flood-prone ground kept powder on ships, so the station moved to Mound City by 1864.
Then
Andrew Hull Foote made Cairo the naval station of the Union's river fleet, later the Mississippi River Squadron, on September 6, 1861. With no land for base facilities, the repair machinery sat afloat on wharf-boats, old steamers, tugs, flatboats and rafts. In November 1863 eighteen vessels lay at Cairo, some under repair.
Damp, flood-prone ground meant shells and powder could be stored only on ships, so the station moved to Mound City, and most stores had been transferred there by May 9, 1864.
Now
Lines owned by CN and smaller railroads run through Cairo today.
