MOUND CITY NAVAL STATION
James B. Eads built the river ironclads Cairo, Cincinnati and Mound City at the Mound City shipyard in 1861. The naval station had marine ways, a foundry, machine shops, a sawmill and a hospital, and from 1864 it held the squadron's stores. Work stopped in June 1865.

James B. Eads built the river ironclads Cairo, Cincinnati and Mound City in 1861 at the Mound City Marine Railway and Shipyard on the Ohio River. The naval station there had marine ways that hauled steamboats out of the river, a foundry, machine and blacksmith shops, a sawmill, marine barracks, supply offices and a hospital, and from 1864 it held the squadron's stores and an ordnance yard.
A wharf-boat storeroom burned on June 2, 1864, with a large stock of naval stores, and the flagship Black Hawk burned and blew up on April 22, 1865. Work stopped in June 1865, and the station's boats, machinery, clothing and provisions were auctioned that September.
