INDIANAPOLIS ARSENAL

Then
Congress provided for a permanent national arsenal at Indianapolis in 1862, after a temporary state arsenal on the Statehouse grounds proved inadequate. The main storehouse went up in 1864 with a seven-story tower whose platform lift hoisted rifles, cannon and other materiel to each floor, and the post stored heavy artillery, small arms and munitions.
The first soldiers arrived in 1865. The government kept the arsenal until 1903.
