JEFFERSONVILLE DEPOT

Union depot established in 1864 for buying, storing and issuing supplies. Soldiers' widows, mothers and sisters sewed its shirts and trousers at home, and it supplied clothing, harness, hardtack and vehicles. It was the only depot in the Ohio Valley not disbanded at the end of the war.

Then

Established in 1864 as an intermediate Union depot for buying, storing and issuing supplies. A shirt factory in a Jefferson General Hospital building cut shirts and trousers and handed them out in bundles to soldiers' widows, mothers and sisters to sew at home, and later in the war the depot supplied clothing, harness, saddlery, hardtack, vehicles and hardware.

It was the only depot in the Ohio Valley not disbanded at the end of the war. The Army built its quadrangle from 1871, designed by Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs, and finished it in 1874.

The quadrangle was gut-renovated in 2005-2006 and now holds offices, stores and the Jeffersonville city hall.

Track in service today runs beside the site, on a line owned by a smaller railroad.
