He pioneered the genre. It’s logical for the first episode of The Fuji Documentary to focus on him. He dominated and defined fújì sound and performance. Even his politics was the most sophisticated. This changed from preaching against bad democratic leadership in 1983, to supporting the military incursion into Nigerian politics in 1984, to protesting against military dictatorship in the 1990s, and extolling democratic principles in the first decade of the 21st century. His albums such as Nigeria (1983); Military (1984); Current Affairs (1989); The Truth (1994); Precaution (1995); Adieu MKO Abiola (1998); and Democracy (1999) combine all the elements of political theorisations that we find in some of the best works on African politics.

More from Saheed Aderinto
Fuji is more than sound. It’s a way of life for millions of Yoruba people. It’s how they see the world around them.
The documentary is about the history of women in Fuji, the history of the genre, how it began, its politics and economy, why women are subdued in the genre and how they fought and overcame the challenges confronting them. We demonstrate the transformation not only in the type of Fuji women are performing but also the challenges they have faced and overcome.
Documentaries can be used to correct mistakes of the past and fight stereotypes and bias. Once people know their history, there is a possibility that such knowledge will empower them to do something meaningful with themselves.
