Confederate sympathizers seized the New York steamer Chesapeake off Cape Cod on December 7, 1863, planning to coal at Saint John, New Brunswick, and run south to Wilmington. Unable to load coal at Saint John, they coaled in Nova Scotia and sold some of the stolen cargo for supplies. Halifax handled much of the coal used by Confederate steamers.
