Commander Matthew F. Maury's agent bought the Royal Navy gunvessel HMS Victor on November 14, 1863, ostensibly for the China trade. She escaped from Sheerness on November 24 with workmen still aboard, before British authorities could detain her. Her bearings burned out in the Thames Estuary, and at Calais the French government held her until the war ended.
