After Fisher's Hill, Sheridan sent cavalry as far as Waynesboro to seize or destroy livestock and provisions and burn barns, mills, factories and railroads, to deny the Confederacy the Valley's food. From October 6, as he withdrew down the Valley, his troopers burned everything of military value. Barns and crops were burned across Rockingham County, and Augusta County lost many farms and nearly all its farm animals.
