Then
Staunton, on the Valley Pike and the Virginia Central, was a Shenandoah Valley manufacturing center, staging area and supply depot for the Confederacy. Its factories made wagons, boots and shoes, clothing and blankets.
David Hunter arrived with 10,000 troops on June 6, 1864, to cut supply and rail lines. The next day they destroyed the railroad station, warehouses, factories and mills and confiscated supplies.
