Gordon's brigade reached the river and its artillery drove off the militia guarding the 5,629-foot covered bridge. Union militia had soaked the bridge in crude oil and set it on fire after a mine failed to drop a span, and it burned in six hours. The burning stopped the Confederate advance across the river to Columbia, a junction of the canal system and the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad.
