CAMP CURTIN
Opened on April 18, 1861 north of Harrisburg, Camp Curtin passed more than 300,000 soldiers, the largest Federal camp of the war. It also served as a supply depot, hospital and prisoner-of-war camp, and closed on November 11, 1865.
Then
Opened on April 18, 1861 on the Dauphin County Agricultural Society grounds north of Harrisburg, Camp Curtin passed more than 300,000 soldiers, the largest Federal camp of the war. Harrisburg's east-west and north-south rail lines made it a point for moving men and supplies to the field armies, and the camp also served as a supply depot, hospital and prisoner-of-war camp. By summer 1862 newspapers reported that its rations took twenty tons of cooked provisions.
It was a mustering-out point at the end of the war and closed on November 11, 1865.
Now
Lines owned by Norfolk Southern and smaller railroads run through Harrisburg today.
