Nearly 80 percent of Baldwin's 1860 output went to states that seceded, and 1861 production fell by more than half. Orders from the U.S. Military Railroads and the Pennsylvania Railroad made up the loss, and Baldwin built more than 100 engines during the war. It also built the first armored railroad cars, baggage cars sheathed in oak and boiler plate with pivot-mounted cannon.
