ALTOONA SHOPS
Repair shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad, begun in 1850, with a machine shop, blacksmith shop, locomotive repair shop and foundry. Wartime demand for locomotives drove much of the town's growth. The first locomotive built at Altoona came out in 1866.
Then
The Pennsylvania Railroad began its Altoona repair shops in 1850, with a machine shop, blacksmith shop, locomotive repair shop and foundry. Wartime demand for locomotives drove much of the town's growth, and by the later years of the war Altoona was counted a valuable city for the North.
The first locomotive built at Altoona came out in 1866.

Industry today
The Railroaders Memorial Museum stands on the site of the Altoona Machine Shops, and the neighboring Juniata Shops still build and remanufacture locomotives.
Track in service today runs beside the site, on a line owned by Norfolk Southern.
