Under Johnston's orders, Jackson's men burned the roundhouses and machine shops, tore up track and burned or dumped dozens of locomotives and hundreds of cars. Selected locomotives were dismantled and hauled by horse teams down the Valley Turnpike to Strasburg for the Manassas Gap Railroad, and later to the Virginia Central. The cut closed the B&O main line into Washington for more than six months.
