Duffields station was a guarded Union supply point that Mosby's rangers had briefly captured on June 29. On October 14 they cut the track and derailed a train just west of the depot, capturing two Union army paymasters and their federal cash. Federal troops had to guard every wagon train, railroad bridge and camp against such raids.
